Most drivers do not use auto glass words every day. So when glass breaks, the first question is simple: what do I even ask for?
The good news is you do not need the perfect name. If you can tell the shop where the glass is and send a photo, that is usually enough to get started.
Start with where the glass is
Location is the easiest way to choose the right service. Front, side, back, or roof. That is the simple version.
Once the shop knows the location, they can ask the right follow-up questions about repair, replacement, mobile service, glass ordering, safety cameras, defroster lines, and vehicle details.
When it is windshield service
The front glass is usually called the windshield. Small stone chips and some smaller cracks may be repairable. Long cracks, edge cracks, spreading cracks, or damage in the driver view may need replacement.
If the damage is on the front glass, start with windshield repair or windshield replacement.
Do not worry about using the perfect glass name. Tell us where the glass is and what happened.
When it is side door glass
Side door glass means the driver side or passenger side window in the doors. This glass is often tempered glass. When it cracks or breaks, replacement is usually the safer answer.
If someone broke a car window, the window shattered, or the door glass is missing, start with side door glass replacement.
When it is rear glass
The back window can be called rear glass, back glass, or rear windshield. Many drivers use these names for the same area.
Rear glass may include defroster lines, a rear wiper opening, antennas, sensors, or trim. If the back glass is cracked, shattered, or loose, start with rear glass replacement.
When it is roof glass
Roof glass may be called a sunroof, moonroof, or panoramic roof. A leak does not always mean the glass needs replacement. Cracked, shattered, loose, or unsafe roof glass may need replacement.
For leaks, stuck panels, wind noise, or trim concerns, start with sunroof repair. For cracked or broken roof glass, start with sunroof replacement.
- Front glass: windshield repair or replacement.
- Door glass: side door glass replacement.
- Back glass: rear glass replacement.
- Roof glass: sunroof repair or replacement.
Send a photo if you are not sure
A photo is often the fastest way to avoid booking the wrong service. Take one photo from farther back so the shop can see the glass location. Then take one close-up photo of the damage.
Also send your year, make, model, and where the vehicle is parked. That helps the shop explain repair, replacement, in-shop service, mobile service, and timing.
