The first goal is simple. Stay safe, document the damage, and get the right replacement glass lined up.
Check safety first
Do not sit on loose glass or reach into the door with your bare hands. Small glass pieces can hide in the seat, floor mat, door pocket, and window track.
If the vehicle is parked somewhere unsafe, move yourself to a safer place first. The glass can wait. Your safety comes first.
Take photos before cleaning
Before you sweep anything up, take photos of the broken window, the full door, the inside of the vehicle, and any missing items or visible damage.
Photos can help when you call the shop. They may also help if you are making a police report or insurance claim.
- Take one close photo of the broken window.
- Take one wider photo showing the full door.
- Take photos of glass inside the vehicle.
- Take photos of any trim, lock, or door damage.
Report theft, vandalism, or damage if needed
If someone broke into the vehicle or stole items, you may need a report number before speaking with insurance. Burlington is served by Halton Regional Police.
For non-emergency situations, check whether the incident can be reported online. If you feel unsafe or there is an emergency, call 911.
Simple rule: If there was theft, vandalism, or damage beyond the glass, document it before cleanup.
Protect the vehicle until replacement
If you need to leave the vehicle parked, cover the opening only as a short-term measure. Avoid anything that could damage paint, trim, tint, or the door seal.
Do not treat plastic cover as a safe long-term fix. It will not protect the vehicle like glass, and it may not hold up in wind or rain.
A smashed side window is not just cosmetic. It leaves the vehicle open to weather, theft, and loose glass.
What to send before replacement
When you call Autoglass Legend, send the vehicle year, make, model, and photos of the damaged door. Tell us if it is the driver side or passenger side, and front door or rear door.
Also mention if glass fell into the door, the window will not move, the lock was damaged, or there is tint on the glass.
From there, the shop can explain side door glass replacement, part timing, cleanup, and whether mobile service may fit.
