A windshield chip is small, but it is still damage to safety glass. That is why a good shop should not answer with repair or replacement until they understand what the chip looks like.

Where the chip is matters
The same size chip can get a different answer depending on where it sits. A small mark away from the driver view may be a better repair candidate than damage right in front of your eyes.
Edge damage is also more serious. The windshield edge helps with strength and sealing. If the chip is too close to the border, a technician may recommend windshield replacement instead of repair.
Shop note: A photo helps, but it does not replace an inspection. The technician still needs to check size, depth, shape, location, and whether the glass is already cracking.
What makes it repairable
A repairable chip is usually fresh, small, and not packed with dirt or moisture. The cleaner the break is, the better the repair resin can work into the damaged area.

Repair is more likely when
- The chip is small and not turning into a long crack.
- The damage is not directly in the driver view.
- The chip is not too close to the windshield edge.
- The glass is still stable and properly sealed.

When replacement is safer
Some chips are already past the point where repair is the right call. If the break has legs spreading from it, if the chip is deep, or if the surrounding glass is weak, replacement may be safer.
Damage in the driver view also needs care. Even after repair, a small mark can remain. If that mark distracts the driver, repair may not be the best answer.
Replacement may be better when
- The chip has started to crack outward.
- The damage is in a sensitive visibility area.
- The chip is near the edge of the glass.
- There are multiple chips close together.
- The windshield has old damage or a bad seal.
What to send the shop
When you ask for a quote, send a close photo of the chip and a wider photo showing where it sits on the windshield. Add your vehicle year, make, and model.
Tell the shop if the vehicle has a camera near the rearview mirror. That detail may matter if the answer changes from repair to replacement.
